This page contains details of the weather station that
records the local weather and publishes it to the Angmering Village Life web
site.
In addition
to the Angmering Village Life web site, this weather station is a member of the
International
Weather Underground web
service who classify it as a Personal Weather Station within their Shoreham
area.

Background InformationThe weather station is physically located in Angmering, West Sussex and is less than 500 meters from the centre of the village. The weather station is manufactured by Davis Instruments (Model No.: Vantage Pro 2 - Wireless), and is connected to a Personal Computer running Virtual Weather Station software 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The weather station went 'live' and started collecting data from Saturday 13th February 2005 whilst situated in Littlehampton, using an Oregon Scientific Weather Station, and was upgraded to the Davis weather station on Saturday 15th August 2009. On 26th February 2012 the weather station was moved to its current location in Angmering. Various statistics can be found on the Statistics page. The weather station has 2 parts; Integrated Sensor Suite (ISS), Anemometer and a Base Station. Together these perform a variety of functions as detailed below.
|
|
Wind Speed & DirectionThe weather station features a combined Wind Speed (Anemometer) and Direction (Weather Vane) sensor that transmits information back to the base station at 2.5 second intervals. The wind speed is measured by the sensors in Miles per Hour. The Virtual Weather Station software captures the data, and analyses it to formulate other relevant statistics e.g. Average Guest Speed and Wind Chill (Feels Like) factors. The instrument is located on top of the garage to ensure the best practical accuracy of the readings, as shown in the picture opposite. |
|
Outside Temperature & HumidityTemperature and Humidity is calculated from readings obtained from the Outside Temperature Sensor contained within the IIS. This sensor transmits the temperature and humidity to the base station every 10 seconds. The data is collated by the base station and passed onto the Virtual Weather Station software (in oc), that, as with the other sensors, is processed in order to publish it to various data repositories. The IIS is located about 2 metres above ground level, as shown in the picture to the left.

RainfallThe weather station also features an electronic rain gauge, that measures the rainfall in 0.2mm increments. Internally, the instrument contains a "dual tipping bucket". The rainfall is collected and funnelled into a 'bucket'. When 0.2mm of water is captured in the bucket, it automatically tips over due to the excess weight (the bucket empties, and an empty bucket is automatically positioned to start capturing the next 0.2mm of rain). The tipping of the bucket, causes a trigger to occur. The trigger is relayed to the base station for onwards data transmission to the Virtual Weather Station software. The IIS is located about 2 metres above ground level, as shown in the picture to the right.

PressureThe Barometric Pressure is calculated with an indoor electronic barometer held within the Base Station. This information together with the Rate of Change (as well as outdoor temperature and humidity) is used to calculate a general forecast for the next 24 hours. This device also monitors the indoor temperature (in oc), as shown in the picture to the left. |
